Welcome to Paprika Recipe Manager!
This guide will introduce you to all of the features available within Paprika. You will learn how to add recipes to Paprika, browse for recipes online, create grocery lists, make meal plans, and more.
If after reading this guide you have any questions that have not been addressed, please consult our knowledge base.
Note
This user guide applies to Paprika 4 (Beta) for Windows. If you have an earlier version of Paprika, some of the features described in this user guide may not be available in your version.
Paprika 4 is the biggest update we have ever released. It features a refreshed interface, new ways to add recipes, new ways to organize, and lots of little improvements throughout the app. This section summarizes what has changed since Paprika 3.
Note
Paprika is now free to download on all platforms, and you no longer have to purchase each version separately. All features are available for testing during the beta period. Afterwards, premium features will require a subscription to Paprika 4 Premium.

File -> Export in the menu bar.Note
Use Paprika 4 the way you normally would: add new recipes, plan your meals, shop from your grocery list, and cook with your recipes. Most of all, we'd like to hear about anything that is broken, confusing, or slower than it was in Paprika 3. Along the way, please try these in particular.
When submitting feedback regarding any of these new import features, it would be very helpful if you provided the source photo, social media post, or text content that you attempted to import.
Submit a request through our support page using the Beta Feedback category. Please include:
Help -> About in the menu bar.Paprika is divided into seven main sections, each of which is accessible by clicking the corresponding section in the Main Menu on the left side of the window.
Shortcut You can also press Ctrl-1 through Ctrl-7 to go to each section of the app, in the order listed below. For instance, Ctrl-5 will navigate you to the meals section. The sections are also available in the View menu in the menu bar.
| Section | Description |
|---|---|
| Recipes | This is the main screen of the application, and contains your recipe collection. From here you can open individual recipes, search for recipes, and view recipes by category. |
| Browser | The built-in web browser allows you to browse for recipes online, and clip your favorite recipes into Paprika. |
| Groceries | This shows your current grocery lists. From here you can check off grocery items as you shop, edit your grocery lists, and add custom grocery list items. |
| Pantry | The pantry section keeps track of common ingredients you may have at home. In this section you can add custom pantry items, change expiration dates and purchased dates, and more. |
| Meals | This is Paprika's meal planner. You can use it to create weekly and monthly meal plans, and view your daily meal schedule. |
| Menus | The menus section allows you to create reusable menus from your favorite recipes. |
| Sharing | The sharing section is where you manage your family sharing and your in-app messages — sending recipes to other Paprika users, and importing the recipes they send you. |
Below the Main Menu, the left sidebar also displays your pinned recipes and your active timers, along with an button. If you have not unlocked the full app yet, an button is also shown — see Paprika 4 Premium. At the bottom of the sidebar, an account box shows Set Up Sync when you are logged out, or your account email and sync status — with a sync button — once you are logged in.
The menu bar at the top of the window contains the File, Edit, Sync, View, and Help menus. Throughout this guide, menu paths are written like File -> Settings. The File menu also holds the Find Duplicates tool. The Help menu contains this user guide (F1), our online Help Center, the software updater, and the About dialog.
Note
Paprika 4 features a completely redesigned interface, and supports both light and dark appearances. Paprika follows your Windows system appearance.
Note
Paprika remembers the size and position of its window, along with the layout of each section, between launches. Only one copy of Paprika runs at a time — launching it again will simply bring the existing window to the front.
There are several ways to add recipes to Paprika:
The description, notes and nutrition boxes start out hidden; click a box's triangle to show it. To add photos, click the photo at the top of the editor. See Adding Recipe Photos.
The menu bar has the same options under File -> New Recipe and File -> New Recipe From Photo(s).
Shortcut Press Ctrl-S to save, or Esc to cancel.
Copy recipe text from an email, a document or a website, then:
Clipboard.
Paprika can turn photos of recipes into structured recipes in your collection. Take a photo of a cookbook page, a magazine clipping, or a handwritten recipe card, and Paprika will read the text and sort it into the appropriate recipe fields for you.
Go to File -> New Recipe From Photo(s) in the menu bar, or press the button on the recipes screen and choose Scan Recipe. Then select one or more image files from your computer — Paprika accepts common image formats such as JPEG, PNG, TIFF, GIF, and BMP. You can select several files at once.
A recipe can span multiple photos — for example, a page of ingredients and a page of directions. Add all of the photos to a single scan and Paprika will combine them into one recipe: scanning additional photos appends their text to the recipe.
The scan screen shows your photos beside the recipe form. Before scanning, you can crop, rotate, and zoom each photo so that only the recipe text is included. When you're ready, press . Paprika will process the photo and fill in the recognized recipe for review.
Note
On Windows, recipes are scanned from image files — there is no camera capture. Snap the photo with your phone and transfer it to your computer, or scan the page with a flatbed scanner. (If you have Paprika on your phone, it's usually easier to scan there and let the recipe sync across.)
After scanning, the recognized text is sorted into the recipe's fields — name, ingredients, directions, and so on — and displayed in the recipe form beside the original photo. Compare the result against the photo, correct anything the scan missed, and press to add the recipe to your collection.
Note
Scanning sends your photos to Paprika's servers for text recognition.
All of your recipes are displayed on the recipes screen. The left pane displays the list of recipe categories, while the right pane shows the recipes themselves.
Note
You can change the recipe view to display recipes in a condensed list, a sortable table, or a photo grid view by using the toggle control in the toolbar. In the table view, click a column header to sort by that column.
Note
The recipes displayed belong to the currently selected cookbook. See Cookbooks for details on switching between cookbooks.
All Recipes is the default selected category, which displays all of your recipes in alphabetical order. If you would like to change the selected category, simply click on a new category to highlight it.
Categories that have subcategories will have an expansion triangle displayed next to them. Click the triangle in order to reveal or hide the subcategories.
The recipes screen contains a search box in the toolbar that you can use to search for specific recipes in your collection. Click it and start typing, and your recipes listing will be filtered as you type. The search options appear below the toolbar while you search. Click in the search options to end the search.
Paprika matches what you type against the start of words, so chick finds "chicken" and "chickpeas", but cake doesn't find "pancake". Words you type together are matched as a phrase, so sour cream finds "sour cream" but not "cream, sour". Capitals and accents don't matter.
By default, Paprika searches the name of the recipe. Use the button next to the Search In label to search one or more recipe fields: Name, Ingredients, Directions, Description, Notes, Source, or Source URL. Paprika remembers your choice for your next search.
Note
You can search for several things at the same time by separating them with commas. Paprika shows the recipes that contain all of them. For example: chicken, spinach.
You can search for recipes across multiple categories by clicking the button next to the label in the search options and selecting one or more categories. You can also choose Favorites, Uncategorized, or the Trash. Choosing a category includes its subcategories. When you choose two or more, use the Match dropdown to choose All Categories or Any Category.
A search starts in the cookbook and category you're browsing. Click the button to search other cookbooks, or check All Cookbooks to search your whole collection. When a search covers more than one cookbook, the category list has a section for each cookbook.
The advanced search editor finds recipes by almost anything about them, such as recipes under 30 minutes, recipes rated four stars or more, or recipes without a photo. To open it while searching, click in the search options. Any words in the search box become rules in the editor.
An advanced search is made of rules. Each rule picks a field, a condition, and a value:
| Fields | Conditions |
|---|---|
| Name, Ingredients, Directions, Notes, Description, Source, Source URL, Nutrition | contains, does not contain, is, is not, begins with, ends with, is empty, is not empty. One rule can look in several of these fields at once. |
| Prep Time, Cook Time, Total Time (in minutes), Servings, Rating | is, is not, is greater than, is at least, is less than, is at most, is between. |
| Difficulty | is, is not. |
| On Favorites, Is Pinned, In Trash | Yes or no. |
| Categories | includes any of, includes all of, excludes, is Uncategorized. |
| Cookbook | is any of, is none of. |
| Thumbnail, Attached Photos | Whether the recipe has a thumbnail, and whether it has attached photos and they've been downloaded. |
At the top of the rules, choose whether recipes must match all or any of them. Click the green button to add a rule, or choose Add Group to add a group of rules with its own all or any choice. Click the red button to remove a rule or group. Under Sort, you can choose how the results are sorted.
When you're done, click . The search options are replaced by a summary of what you're searching for. To change the search, click .
Note
An advanced search looks in all of your cookbooks. To limit it, add a Cookbook rule. The words in a text rule are matched as a single phrase, anywhere in the field. The first time you search by time or servings, Paprika needs a moment to index your recipes, and a notice says the results may be incomplete until it's done.
You can save an advanced search to run again later. In the advanced search editor, click Save Current Search, enter a name, and click . Saved searches sync to all of your devices.
To run a saved search, open the advanced search editor and double-click the search under Saved Searches, then click . This replaces the search in the editor. Click to run it.
To change a saved search, load it, make your changes, and click Update Saved Search. To rename or delete a saved search, right-click it in the editor and choose Rename or Delete.
You can sort recipes by clicking the button in the toolbar.
You can sort recipes by Name, Rating, Most Recent, Prep Time, Cook Time, Total Time, or Servings. Under Order, choose Ascending or Descending.
Click in the upper right corner of the recipe screen, or right-click a recipe in the list and choose Edit. The recipe opens in the same form you use to add one.
Shortcut Press Ctrl-E on the recipe screen.
There are several ways to delete a recipe:
Note
Deleted recipes will go into the Trash and be displayed in that section of your categories list. To permanently delete the recipe, go to the trash category on the main recipes view and click . To undo the deletion, right-click on the recipe and choose the Undo Delete action. Only recipes go into the trash: all other items (meals, groceries, etc) are deleted immediately when you select them for deletion.
These are the fields that you can enter when you create or edit a recipe:
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Name | The name of the recipe. |
| Difficulty | The difficulty of the recipe, from Easy to Hard. Custom values may also be entered. |
| Servings | The number of servings this recipe makes. |
| Prep Time | The amount of preparation time this recipe requires. |
| Cook Time | The amount of cooking time this recipe requires. |
| Total Time | The total amount of time this recipe requires. |
| Rating | A star rating from 0 to 5 for this recipe. |
| Categories | The categories this recipe belongs to. Click the field to choose them. |
| Cookbook | The cookbook this recipe belongs to. If the recipe has categories the other cookbook doesn't, Paprika asks whether to Copy Categories into it or Don't Copy. |
| Source | Where this recipe came from. Grandma, Serious Eats, etc. |
| Source URL | This is an optional field that records the original URL of the recipe if it came from a website. |
| Description | A short introduction of the recipe, displayed above the directions. |
| Notes | Any cooking notes you would like to include with the recipe. Displayed below the directions. |
| Nutrition | Nutrition notes, a Nutrition Facts table, or both. Displayed below the ingredients. See Nutrition. |
| Ingredients | The ingredients required for this recipe. Note Create ingredient headings by ending them with a colon (e.g. Sauce:). |
| Directions | The directions for this recipe. |
| Photos | An optional thumbnail and one or more higher-resolution images. You can select files from the filesystem or from the clipboard. |
You can add formatting and images to the description, ingredients, directions, nutrition and notes fields.
When you begin editing those fields, formatting buttons appear beside the field's heading: Bold, Italic, Heading, Bulleted List, Numbered List, Add Link, Add Photo, Add Recipe, and Help, which shows examples of formatting. Hover over a button to see its name. If the window is too narrow for all of them, the rest are under the button at the end.
The Heading and list buttons add (or remove) # , - or 1. at the start of the selected lines. When you press Enter at the end of a list item, the next line continues the list. You can also press Ctrl-B for bold, Ctrl-I for italics, and Ctrl-K to add a link.
Note
The formatting buttons can be turned off: see Show Text Formatting Buttons in Settings. The keyboard shortcuts still work.
Paprika uses a modified form of Markdown for formatting:
| Format | Syntax | Instructions |
|---|---|---|
| Bold | **bold** or __bold__ |
Surround words with two asterisks or two underscores. |
| Italic | *italics* or _italics_ |
Surround words with one asterisk or one underscore. |
| Links | [Google](https://www.google.com) |
Put the title in brackets and the URL in parentheses. Only the title is displayed. |
| Photos | [photo:Mixing the Batter] |
Put the name of one of the recipe's photos in brackets, after photo:. A thumbnail is displayed; click it to see the full size image in the photo gallery. |
| Recipes | [recipe:Brussels Sprouts with Pancetta] |
Put the name of another recipe in brackets, after recipe:. Click the link to open that recipe. |
| Headings | # Sauce |
Start a line with # and a space. Use ## to ###### for smaller headings. |
| Unordered List | - Preheat the oven |
Start each line with a dash and a space. |
| Ordered List | 1. Preheat the oven |
Start each line with a number, a period and a space. |
A heading or a list has to start its own paragraph: leave a blank line before it when it follows other text.
Paprika looks up photos and recipes based on name; if multiple recipes exist with the same name, the first one retrieved will be opened. If multiple photos exist with the same name, the first one returned will be opened in the gallery. If the recipe or photo name changes, links will need to be updated.
You can add multiple photos to a recipe, and photos are synced with your cloud data. You can add photo files of up to 20 MB; when you save the recipe, Paprika scales larger photos down to at most 3096 pixels on the longest side and 5 MB in size. The size of each photo is displayed in the edit photos view.
From the edit recipe view, click the photo at the top of the editor to see all photos associated with a recipe. The number of photos is shown under it. To add a photo from the filesystem, click in the upper right and choose Choose File. Photos can also be dragged in from other apps, or copied to the clipboard. Once a photo is copied to the clipboard, the Clipboard option in the menu becomes available. Choose that option to add the photo to the recipe.
When you're done with the photos, click the button in the upper left to return to the rest of the recipe.
Each photo displays its name and buttons to edit the name of the photo and delete the photo in the toolbar above the thumbnailed image.
The photo name is used to identify the photo when embedding it in text, and will also be displayed at the top of the photo gallery.
The thumbnail does not need to be one of the associated photos in the gallery. You can delete the thumbnail using the button next to the photo of the thumbnail. This will not affect existing recipe photos.
You can also change the thumbnail by clicking the button, then clicking the name of the photo you'd like to use as the thumbnail.
Drag to reorder photos and change their position in the photo gallery.
Note
Photos will be uploaded to the cloud immediately but downloaded on demand by other devices (to save space). Photos associated with a recipe are downloaded when that recipe is opened.
From the recipes screen, click on a single recipe in the list or images view in order to open it. From the recipes table view, double click a recipe in the listing to open it.
This is the main recipe view. The ingredients are displayed on the left, information about the recipe is displayed near the top, and the directions are displayed below. The description will be displayed above the directions and the notes will be displayed below the directions. Any nutritional information, including a Nutrition Facts label, will appear below the ingredients.
Note
If the recipe has a source URL, the source will be highlighted and underlined. You can click on the source to load the original source URL in the browser.
The toolbar above the recipe has the button on the left, the button on the right, and the recipe's other actions in the middle. The buttons show only icons; hover over a button to see its name.

Note
Timers run inside Paprika, and do not use Windows notifications. A timer will only go off while Paprika is running.
Scaling - You can scale the ingredients of a recipe by clicking on the button under the Ingredients heading.
When the ingredients scaling popover appears, select the amount you'd like to scale the ingredients by and then click . The scale button will update to display the current recipe scale.
The amount to scale can be entered as a whole number, decimal, or fraction (ex: 3, 0.25, 1/3).
If you add a scaled recipe to the grocery list, the grocery list items will preserve the ingredients scaling.
Note
Paprika anticipates this ingredient format: quantity unit ingredient, i.e. 1 cup milk. For best results, ensure your ingredients are entered in this format.
Converting - You can convert ingredients units from standard (US) units to metric or reset them to their original units by using the dropdown in the same popover.
When you are cooking, you may find it useful to cross off ingredients once you have used them. Simply click the desired ingredient in order to cross it off. (Click again to un-cross it.)
You can also highlight the current step of your directions by clicking on it to help keep your place.
You can pin active recipes to easily switch between them while you are cooking. To pin a recipe, click the button in the recipe toolbar, and choose . You can also right-click a recipe in the recipes list and choose , or simply drag a recipe from the list onto the Pinned Recipes group in the left sidebar.
Your pinned recipes will be displayed in the left sidebar. Click on any of these recipes to switch to them. When a recipe is pinned, Paprika will keep track of the ingredients you have crossed off and the current directions you have highlighted, so you don't lose your place.
When you're done cooking, hover over the pinned recipe in the list and click the to un-pin the recipe. You can also right-click the pinned recipe and choose .
Note
Recipe pins are synced across devices.
If there are photos associated with the recipe, you can click the thumbnail in the recipe view to display the photo gallery. The corner of the thumbnail shows a photo icon with the number of photos, or a link icon when the thumbnail opens a photo from the web instead. The photo gallery contains an ordered list of photos with names displayed at the top.
Note
While Paprika is syncing, a recipe can arrive before its photos. If you click its thumbnail then, Paprika tells you the photos for this recipe are still syncing.
You can scroll the photos by using the arrow keys on your keyboard, or select a new photo by clicking the thumbnail at the bottom of the view.
To copy the current photo to the clipboard, or save it as a file, click the button in the upper right corner of the gallery and choose Copy or Save As….
You can close the photo gallery by pressing the key on your keyboard or clicking the button in the upper left hand corner of the view.
Note
When downloading recipes via the browser, only a link to the online photo is saved unless you explicitly add photos to the recipe using the context menu or by dragging photos into the edit photos screen. In the case that the thumbnail references a linked photo, clicking the thumbnail will load the photo from the internet and display it.
Tip If both a photo link and recipe photos exist, the photo gallery will load and the link button in the upper right corner of the gallery can be used to load the linked source image from the website.

A recipe can hold two kinds of nutrition information: nutrition notes you type yourself, and a Nutrition Facts table like the label on packaged food. Paprika can fill in the table for you by analyzing the recipe's ingredients.
While editing a recipe, click the Nutrition heading to open the panel. The Text | Table buttons in the heading switch between the two kinds of nutrition information. Paprika saves both, so a recipe can have notes and a table.
Servings, Serving Size, Serving Weight in grams, and the amount per serving of each nutrient on the label, from Calories down to Potassium. Use the arrows beside Servings to change the servings, which start at the recipe's own.If your notes already list values such as "Calories: 250", click in the Nutrition heading to copy them into the table.
Paprika can calculate the Nutrition Facts from the recipe's ingredients. It matches each ingredient to a food in the USDA nutrition database and works out its weight from the amount in the recipe.
To analyze a recipe, click in the Nutrition heading. Paprika lists each ingredient with the food it matched. An ingredient may also show:
No USDA Match - Paprika couldn't find a matching food.No Ingredient Detected - the line isn't an ingredient, such as a heading. Not counted - the ingredient is left out of the totals.Click an ingredient to open Edit Ingredient, where you can:
Quantity and Measurement that Paprika read.USDA Mapping. Click Choose… and search for the food in Find Food.Exclude from calculation for an ingredient you won't use. When a line offers a choice, such as "butter or margarine", Paprika counts only one of them. When the list looks right, click . If some ingredients have no usable match, Paprika warns you with Unmatched Ingredients. Choose Calculate Anyway to leave them out, or Cancel to go back and fix them.
The next step shows the calculated Nutrition Facts per serving. Change the servings to recalculate the amounts, or edit any value directly. If the recipe gives no amount for an ingredient, such as "salt to taste", a note lists what the totals leave out. Click to copy the values into the recipe's table, or to return to the ingredients.
Note
The results of ingredient analysis are estimates. Paprika remembers your changes in the analysis while you edit the recipe, so you can close it and come back.
When a recipe has Nutrition Facts, the recipe view shows them as a label in the Nutrition section, with the servings per recipe, the serving size, calories, and each nutrient's percent daily value. If the recipe also has nutrition notes, use the Table | Text switch above the label to see either one.
To print nutrition information, turn on Show Nutrition in the print options. The printout includes both the Nutrition Facts label and your notes.
Paprika allows you to organize recipes into categories to make them easier to manage.
Note
Each cookbook has its own set of categories.
To edit a recipe's categories, navigate into the recipe and press the button in order to edit the recipe. From here, click the Categories field to access the recipe's categories. You can check one (or more) categories to associate with the recipe — the field lists the categories currently selected. Press the button when you are done.
Shortcut From the main recipes listing, you can drag and drop one or more recipe rows into a category. This allows you to quickly assign categories to a recipe without having to open up the recipe itself.
Paprika can suggest categories for a recipe based on its name, ingredients, and directions. While editing a recipe, click the Suggest Categories button, with the sparkles icon, beside the Categories field. Paprika adds up to five categories to the recipe, using your existing categories where they fit. Review them before you save, and remove any you don't want.
Two settings in the Recipes group of the General tab in the Settings window control suggestions:
Auto-Suggest Categories - Suggests categories automatically when you add a recipe from the browser, the clipboard, or a scan. Off by default.Suggest New Categories - Lets suggestions include categories you don't have yet. Turn it off to use only your existing categories. On by default. The Suggest Categories button works whether or not Auto-Suggest Categories is turned on.
You can add a category by pressing the button in the categories toolbar.
Optional To create a subcategory, first select the parent category and then press the button. A new subcategory will be added to the parent category. You can also drag-and-drop to move categories into and out of subcategories.
To edit a category, simply click on it once, and then again. If you would like to delete the category, highlight it and right-click the category and press .
Use the sort menu in the categories toolbar to order your categories by Name (the default), or choose Custom to arrange them yourself — when the sort is set to Custom, you can drag and drop to rearrange the category order. When sorted by Name, you can still drag a category into or out of another category.
There are several built-in categories. These categories cannot be removed and provide special ways to view your recipes:
| Category | Description |
|---|---|
| All Recipes | Lists all of the recipes in your collection in alphabetical order. |
| Most Recent | Sorts your recipes by the date they were added, with the most recent recipes near the top. |
| Top Rated | Lists all of the recipes in order from highest star rating to lowest. |
| Favorites | List all recipes that you have added to your favorites. |
| Uncategorized | Lists all of the recipes that have not been assigned to a category. |
| Trash | Lists all of the recipes that have been marked for deletion. They cannot be opened or edited. Emptying the trash will permanently delete these recipes. |
Paprika 4 allows you to organize your recipes into multiple cookbooks. Each cookbook is a separate collection with its own recipes and categories. You might use one cookbook for everyday cooking, another for baking, and a third for recipes you're still planning to try.
Every account starts with a single cookbook named My Cookbook. If you never create another cookbook, Paprika works just like it always has. Your default cookbook cannot be deleted.
Note
Cookbooks are synced with your Paprika account, so your cookbooks will appear on all of your devices.
The name of the current cookbook is displayed at the top of the categories pane on the recipes screen. Click it to reveal the cookbook menu, which lists all of your cookbooks with a checkmark next to the current one. Select the cookbook you would like to view. The recipes list and categories apply to the currently selected cookbook. A search starts there too, but you can widen it to other cookbooks.
To create a new cookbook, choose Manage Cookbooks... from the cookbook menu, then press the button at the bottom of the Cookbooks dialog. A cookbook named New Cookbook will be added with its name ready to edit — type the name you would like and press Enter.
Choose Manage Cookbooks... from the cookbook menu to open the Cookbooks dialog, which lists all of your cookbooks. Use the sort menu at the bottom of the dialog to order the list by Name, or choose Custom to arrange the cookbooks yourself — when the sort is set to Custom, you can drag and drop cookbooks to reorder them. You can also switch cookbooks from here: select a cookbook and press .
Right-click a cookbook in the list to reveal its context menu, where you can choose Edit to rename the cookbook, Share… to send it to someone, or Delete to remove it. Paprika will ask you to confirm before deleting a cookbook.
Note
Cookbooks that other people have shared with you cannot be renamed.
Note
Deleting a cookbook deletes the recipes inside it. If you would like to keep any of the recipes, move them to another cookbook first.
To move recipes into a different cookbook, select one (or more) recipes in the recipes list, then right-click and choose the destination from the Cookbook submenu. The cookbook the recipes are in now has a checkmark beside it. You can also change a recipe's cookbook with the Cookbook field when editing the recipe.
If the recipes have categories that the destination cookbook doesn't, Paprika asks whether to bring them along. creates the missing categories in the destination cookbook, and moves the recipes without their categories. Paprika doesn't ask when the recipes are uncategorized or the destination already has all their categories.
You can send a copy of an entire cookbook to another Paprika user. Click the cookbook name at the top of the categories pane and choose Share "My Cookbook" (the menu item shows the current cookbook's name), or right-click a cookbook in the Cookbooks dialog and choose Share…. Enter the recipient's email address and send — the cookbook is delivered as an in-app message, and the recipient can import all of its recipes in one step. See Sending Recipes & Cookbooks for details.
Note
If you are part of a family account, your family members share your recipe collection automatically — you don't need to share cookbooks with them individually.
Paprika's built in web browser lets you easily search the internet for your favorite recipes and save recipes from many different websites.
The upper toolbar contains buttons for the standard browser actions — back, forward, and reload/stop — along with a combined address bar and search bar, the button, and the button.
Type a URL into the address bar to navigate to that page (ex: paprikaapp.com), or type in a search term to search the web. (ex: beet salad). If you've copied a link, right-click the address bar and choose Paste and Go to open it in one step.
The button offers Copy Link to copy the page's address, Email to email a link to the page, and Open in Browser to open the page in your default web browser.
Shortcut Press Ctrl-L (File -> Open Location) to quickly jump to the address bar from anywhere in the app.
The button displays your current bookmarks. From there you can load a bookmark into the browser, edit a bookmark, and add new bookmarks to the list. Bookmarks sync with other cloud data. Note The bookmark labeled Paprika Home displays instructions on how to download recipes from the browser and a list of favorite sites to get you started.
The lower toolbar displays tools for saving recipes — see the clipboard tools below.
Paprika supports clipping recipes from hundreds of different recipe sites. In order to clip a recipe:
Shortcut Press Ctrl-S in the browser to trigger the button. Once any recipe data has been captured, the button relabels itself and saves the recipe directly.
In addition to traditional recipe sites, Paprika can save recipes from social media posts, stories, and pages on sites such as TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. Paprika reads the recipe from the text of the post, including its caption or description, so posts on other sites may work too.
If Paprika wasn't able to clip the recipe for you, or only partially clipped the recipe, you can use the clipboard toolbar at the bottom to manually copy/paste the recipe information from any website. The toolbar contains a photo well on the left, a button for each recipe field — Name, Description, Ingredients, Directions, Prep, Cook, Total, Servings, Notes, and Nutrition — and the pencil (edit), , and buttons on the right.
To use the clipboard tools:

Paprika's grocery list makes it easy to shop for your recipes. You can make multiple grocery lists, add entire recipes to your grocery list, as well as your own custom grocery items.
The grocery list will automatically attempt to consolidate similar items with one another. For example, if one recipe calls for 2 eggs, and another recipe calls for 3 eggs, the consolidated listing will display 5 eggs total.
Note
You can turn off the grocery list consolidation feature in the Settings window if you do not find it useful.
To add an entire recipe to the grocery list, open the recipe and press the button in the toolbar.
An ingredients pane will pop up displaying that recipe's ingredient list. Here you can check/uncheck ingredients before they are added to the grocery list.
(For example, if you already have salt at home, you can uncheck it before adding the recipe to the grocery list.)

You can remove individual items from the grocery list by highlighting them and then right-clicking and selecting .
Note
You can delete multiple items at once by holding down Shift or Ctrl and clicking to select multiple items.
Finally, you can clear the entire list using the action described below.
Mark an item as purchased simply by clicking within the checkbox. A checkmark will appear to indicate that the item has been purchased. You can mark the item as unpurchased by clicking it once more.
You can filter grocery items according to whether they are purchased or unpurchased using the filter control in the toolbar.
You can also filter grocery items according to the recipe they belong to, or show only custom grocery items.
While you are showing only unpurchased items, a line under the list says how many purchased items are hidden, such as 12 purchased items hidden. Click it to see those items, without changing your filter. Click beside it to remove the purchased items from the list. If every item has been purchased, the list says All Items Purchased and offers a button.
By default, your grocery list will be sorted into aisles based on the type of ingredient. For example, milk will be placed into the Dairy aisle, and spinach will be placed under Produce.
If you prefer, you can change the grocery list to sort by recipe, by clicking the button in the toolbar and choosing Recipe instead.

Paprika Cloud Sync is an automated backup and syncing service for your recipe collection. It will automatically upload your recipes, cookbooks, categories, grocery lists, pantry, meals, and other data to our cloud servers, ensuring your data is safely backed up.
If you have Paprika installed on multiple devices, you can also use Paprika Cloud Sync to keep your data synced across all of those devices.
Note
Syncing will not be enabled until you set up a Paprika account.
Note
Paprika Cloud Sync is not available in the free version of Paprika.
You'll create one Paprika account for all devices sharing the same recipe collection. You can do this through the settings pane of any version of Paprika, and then log in to that same account on all other versions of Paprika.
To create an account, open the Settings window, and then select the tab. Then select .
Enter in your name, and the email address and password you would like to use for this account.
Note

You can choose how often you would like to sync using the Update dropdown.
|
| Sync Now | Pressing this will initiate a new sync immediately. |
If you are logged in, your account email and sync status are displayed at the bottom of the left sidebar, and you can initiate a new sync from there using the sync button. You can also choose Sync -> Sync Now in the menu bar.
Paprika can import recipe databases from several other applications. To perform an import:
File -> Import in the menu bar.Format dropdown.Cookbook dropdown. It starts out set to the cookbook you're viewing.Shortcut You can also simply double-click a .paprikarecipes file in File Explorer — Paprika will open (or come to the front if it's already running) and show the import dialog for that file. Recipes imported this way are added to the cookbook you're viewing.
Note
Paprika export files can contain entire cookbooks. To recreate them, check Import cookbooks from file when importing a Paprika file — each recipe is then added to the cookbook it was exported from, and any of those cookbooks you don't have are created.
The currently supported file types are:
| Supported File Types | |
| .paprikarecipe & .paprikarecipes | Paprika's emailed recipe format and its export format. |
| .yml | A plain YAML file. See below for more details on this format. |
| .mx2, .mxp & .mz2 | MasterCook export formats. |
| .mmf | MealMaster export format. |
| .zip & .db | Pepperplate export file or database file. Click here for instructions on how to get your database file from Pepperplate. |
| .zip | Copy Me That export file. |
| .dvo | Cook'n export format. |
| .fdx & .fdxz | Living Cookbook export formats. |
| .mcb | My CookBook export format. |
YAML is a simple, plain text file with sections delimited by key-value pairs. To indicate a block of text, use an initial pipe character, as shown in directions and ingredients. Consistent indenting should be used, but the order of the fields does not matter, and most are optional with the exception of the name, ingredients and directions. It is recommended that you use an online YAML validator such as this one to validate your file if you're experiencing difficulties importing.
Note
The YAML format is quite strict with regards to whitespace and indentation. Please also make sure your file is saved with a UTF-8 encoding.

Paprika currently offers two different export formats:
| Export Formats | |
| HTML |
A standard portable data format that allows you to preserve a copy of your recipe collection. Your recipes
will be exported to a directory, with an individual HTML file for each recipe, and an index.html
displaying the list of exported recipes. Each recipe file will contain
hrecipe or schema metadata in the HTML.
|
| .paprikarecipes | Paprika's bulk recipe export format. These files can be easily imported into any copy of Paprika. |
File -> Export in the menu bar.Categories button. By default all recipes are exported, but you can restrict the export to one or more categories if you would like.HTML or Paprika Recipe Format.Note
If your recipe names contain non-English characters, check Use Unicode filenames to preserve them in the exported file names.
Shortcut To export only certain recipes, select them in the recipes list, then right-click and choose .
Over the years, it's easy to end up with the same recipe saved more than once. The Find Duplicates tool helps you clean these up. To open it, go to File -> Find Duplicates… in the menu bar.
Under Match Recipes By, check the fields that must match: Name, Source, Source URL, Ingredients, or Directions. Recipes are considered duplicates when all of the checked fields match. Click to find duplicate recipes.
The matching recipes are listed in groups, with columns such as the rating, times and date added to help you tell them apart. Click a column header to sort within each group, and double-click a recipe to open it. Click to select every recipe except the oldest in each group, review the selection, and then click to move the selected recipes to the Trash.
Paprika for Windows keeps itself up to date with a built-in software updater — updates are not delivered through an app store.
Paprika automatically checks for a new version when it starts. You can also check at any time by choosing Help -> Check For Updates in the menu bar. If you are already up to date, Paprika will report that there are no updates available at this time.
When an update is found, Paprika displays a Software Update dialog with the new version's release notes and three choices:
| Button | Description |
|---|---|
| Install Update | Downloads the update and installs it right away. |
| Remind Me Later | Skips the update for now. Paprika will offer it again the next time it checks. |
| Skip This Version | Ignores this particular version. Paprika will not offer it again, but will still offer future updates. |
Note
Occasionally an update is required — for example, when the sync service changes — in which case the update must be installed to continue using sync.
Note
Paprika 4 requires Windows 10 or later.
