Note
This user guide applies to Paprika 4 (Beta) for Android. If you have an earlier version of Paprika, some of the features described in this user guide may not be available in your version.
Paprika 4 is the biggest update we have ever released. It features a refreshed interface, new ways to add recipes, new ways to organize, and lots of little improvements throughout the app. This section summarizes what has changed since Paprika 3.
Note
Paprika is now free to download on all platforms, and you no longer have to purchase each version separately. All features are available for testing during the beta period. Afterwards, premium features will require a subscription to Paprika 4 Premium.

You're a beta tester, and pressing Leave.Use Paprika 4 the way you normally would: add new recipes, plan your meals, shop from your grocery list, and cook with your recipes. Most of all, we'd like to hear about anything that is broken, confusing, or slower than it was in Paprika 3. Along the way, please try these in particular.
When submitting feedback regarding any of these new import features, it would be very helpful if you provided the source photo, social media post, or text content that you attempted to import.
Submit a request through our support page using the Beta Feedback category. Please include:

Paprika is divided into several main sections, each of which is accessible from the Main Menu — a navigation drawer that slides in from the left side of the screen.
Tap the menu button in the upper left corner of the toolbar to open the Main Menu, then tap the section you would like to visit.
Shortcut You can also swipe from the left edge of the screen towards the middle to reveal the Main Menu.
| Section | Description |
|---|---|
| Recipes | This is the main screen of the application, and contains your recipe collection. From here you can open individual recipes, search for recipes, and view recipes by category. |
| Browser | The built-in web browser allows you to browse for recipes online, and clip your favorite recipes into Paprika. |
| Groceries | This shows your grocery lists. From here you can check off grocery items as you shop, edit your grocery lists, and add custom grocery list items. |
| Pantry | The pantry section keeps track of common ingredients you may have at home. In this section you can add custom pantry items, change expiration dates and purchased dates, and more. |
| Meals | This is Paprika's meal planner. You can use it to create daily, weekly and monthly meal plans, and view your meal schedule. |
| Menus | The menus section allows you to create reusable menus from your favorite meal plans. |
| Sharing | The sharing section is where you manage your family sharing and your in-app messages — sending recipes to other Paprika users, and importing the recipes they send you. |
| Settings | Opens the Settings panel, where you configure Paprika and manage your account. |
Below the sections, the Main Menu also contains an row, which opens the Paprika 4 Premium purchase screen. (The Unlock Premium row disappears once you have subscribed.) Underneath it, the Main Menu displays your Pinned Recipes and your running Timers, complete with live countdowns. At the top of the Main Menu, you'll find your account status and a sync button.
List screens such as Recipes, Groceries, Pantry, Meals and Menus have a toolbar floating at the bottom of the screen. It starts with the button, which lets you select items in the list. While you are selecting, a button appears beside it. The screen's own buttons, such as Sort, come next, and the button at the end holds the screen's other actions. While you are selecting, the Actions button holds the actions for the selected items instead. Tap and hold a button to see its name.
Buttons for searching and adding stay in the toolbar at the top of the screen. While you are selecting, that toolbar shows the button for deleting the selected items. The floating toolbar hides while the keyboard is showing.
Note
On larger tablets, Paprika uses a wider layout: the Main Menu is replaced by a permanent rail of section icons down the left edge of the screen, and sections such as Recipes, Groceries, Pantry, Menus, and Sharing display two panes side by side. A 10-inch tablet uses this layout in both portrait and landscape; a 7-inch tablet uses it in landscape, and the Main Menu when held upright. The menu button at the top of the rail still opens the full Main Menu, where you can reach your pinned recipes, timers, and the Unlock Premium row. On phones, Paprika is displayed in portrait orientation.
Note
Pressing your device's Back button closes the Main Menu if it is open; otherwise it steps back through the sections you have previously visited.
Note
Paprika supports both light and dark appearances, and follows your device's theme.
There are several ways to add recipes to Paprika:
The times, servings, difficulty and source are in the Info section, which starts out collapsed; tap its header to open it. To add photos, tap the Photos row. See Adding Recipe Photos. To discard the recipe, tap and choose .
Copy recipe text from an email, a document or a website, then:
Create from Clipboard.
Paprika can turn photos of recipes into structured recipes in your collection. Snap a photo of a cookbook page, a magazine clipping, or a handwritten recipe card, and Paprika will read the text and sort it into the appropriate recipe fields for you.
From the recipes list, press the button to add a new recipe, then select Scan From Camera to photograph the recipe with your device's camera, or Scan From Photo to choose an existing image with the system photo picker. You can also paste a photo you have copied to the clipboard.
The photo fills the screen, with a strip of thumbnails for your photos and a toolbar along the bottom:
Photo Library, the Camera, or the Clipboard. A recipe can span multiple photos — for example, a page of ingredients and a page of directions — and Paprika will combine them into one recipe.Rotate Left and Rotate Right to turn it, then press Done.Tap a thumbnail to show that photo. Press on each photo you would like to read.
After a scan, the recognized text is sorted into the recipe's fields — name, ingredients, directions, and so on — and the recipe form opens beside the photo, so you can compare the two. On a phone, the form slides up over the bottom half of the screen; drag it up to see more of the form, or down to see more of the photo. On a tablet, the form sits under the photo when the tablet is upright, and beside it when the tablet is sideways.
Scanning another page adds to the recipe: the new text fills the fields that are still empty and is added to the end of longer fields like the ingredients and directions. A scan never replaces text you have typed. To start over, press in the form; the photos are kept.
Correct anything the scan missed, and press in the form to add the recipe to your collection. To leave without saving, press the button in the upper left corner.
Note
Scanning sends your photos to Paprika's servers for text recognition.
All of your recipes are displayed on the recipes screen. On phones, the recipes list fills the screen, and you can bring up the categories list by tapping the name of the current category at the top of the recipes list. On tablets, the categories list is displayed in the pane to the left of your recipes.
Note
The recipes displayed belong to the currently selected cookbook. See Cookbooks for details on switching between cookbooks.
The recipes screen offers two ways to view recipes: a grid view with photos, and a list view showing details such as the thumbnail, name, rating and source. You can flip between these views using the view button in the floating toolbar at the bottom of the recipes screen. Its icon shows the view it will switch to.
All Recipes is the default selected category, which displays all of your recipes in alphabetical order.
If you would like to change the selected category, press the button in the toolbar to reveal the categories list. From here, you can tap on a different category to select it.
Note
The name of the button reflects the currently selected category, and changes when you select a different category. The number of recipes in the selected category is displayed under the name on phones (for example, 12 Recipes), and next to it on tablets.
Note
On tablets, simply tap on a category in the left pane to select it.
To select a subcategory, press the button next to a category to navigate into its subcategories, and then tap on one of the subcategories.
The recipes screen contains a search button in the toolbar that you can tap to search for specific recipes in your collection. Press the search button and start typing, and your recipes listing will be filtered as you type.
Paprika matches what you type against the start of words, so chick finds "chicken" and "chickpeas", but cake doesn't find "pancake". Words you type together are matched as a phrase, so sour cream finds "sour cream" but not "cream, sour". Capitals and accents don't matter.
Note
You can search for several things at the same time by separating them with commas. Paprika shows the recipes that contain all of them. For example: chicken, spinach.
While searching, the options above the results change what's searched:
Search In - The fields to search: Name, Ingredients, Directions, Description, Notes, Source, and Source URL. Only Name is selected at first, and Paprika remembers your choice for your next search.Categories - Limit the search to one or more categories, or to Favorites, Uncategorized, or the Trash. Choosing a category includes its subcategories. When you choose two or more, choose All to find recipes in every one of them, or Any to find recipes in at least one.Cookbooks - Search one cookbook, several, or All Cookbooks. When a search covers more than one cookbook, the category list has a section for each cookbook.Tap Search Options to show or hide the Categories and Cookbooks choices.
A search starts in the cookbook and category you're browsing. To search your whole collection, choose All Recipes under Categories and All Cookbooks under Cookbooks.
The advanced search editor finds recipes by almost anything about them, such as recipes under 30 minutes, recipes rated four stars or more, or recipes without a photo. To open it while searching, tap in the search options. Any words in the search field become rules in the editor.
An advanced search is made of rules. Each rule picks a field, a condition, and a value:
| Fields | Conditions |
|---|---|
| Name, Ingredients, Directions, Notes, Description, Source, Source URL, Nutrition | contains, does not contain, is, is not, begins with, ends with, is empty, is not empty. One rule can look in several of these fields at once. |
| Prep Time, Cook Time, Total Time (in minutes), Servings, Rating | is, is not, is greater than, is at least, is less than, is at most, is between. |
| Difficulty | is, is not. |
| On Favorites, Is Pinned, In Trash | Yes or no. |
| Categories | includes any of, includes all of, excludes, is Uncategorized. |
| Cookbook | is any of, is none of. |
| Thumbnail, Attached Photos | Whether the recipe has a thumbnail, and whether it has attached photos and they've been downloaded. |
At the top of the rules, choose whether recipes must match all or any of them. Tap the button to add a rule, or choose Add Group to add a group of rules with its own all or any choice. Tap the button to remove a rule or group. Under Sort, you can choose how the results are sorted.
When you're done, tap . The search options are replaced by a summary of what you're searching for. To change the search, tap .
Note
An advanced search looks in all of your cookbooks. To limit it, add a Cookbook rule. The words in a text rule are matched as a single phrase, anywhere in the field. The first time you search by time or servings, Paprika needs a moment to index your recipes, and a notice says the results may be incomplete until it's done.
You can save an advanced search to run again later. In the advanced search editor, tap Save Current Search, enter a name, and tap . Saved searches sync to all of your devices.
To run a saved search, open the advanced search editor and tap the search under Saved Searches, then tap . This replaces the search in the editor. Tap to run it.
To change a saved search, load it, make your changes, and tap Update Saved Search. To rename or delete a saved search, tap and hold it in the editor, and choose Rename or Delete.
You can sort recipes by pressing the button in the floating toolbar at the bottom of the recipes screen. Choose the field you would like to sort by: Name, Rating, Most Recent, Prep Time, Cook Time, Total Time, or Servings.
Note
Tap and hold the button to see the field the list is currently sorted by, with an arrow indicating whether the sort is ascending or descending. The button is unavailable while the Most Recent or Top Rated category is selected, since those lists have their own order.
Tap in the upper right corner of the recipe screen, next to . The recipe opens in the same form you use to add one.
There are several ways to delete a recipe:
From the recipes list:
From the recipe screen:
Note
Deleted recipes will go into the Trash and be displayed in that section of your categories list. To permanently delete the recipes, select the trash category, press the button in the floating toolbar, and choose . To undo the deletion, tap and hold the recipe(s) you'd like to restore from the trash, press the button, and choose Undo Delete. Only recipes go into the trash: all other items (meals, groceries, etc) are deleted immediately when you select them for deletion.
These are the fields that you can enter when you create or edit a recipe:
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Name | The name of the recipe. |
| Difficulty | The difficulty of the recipe. |
| Servings | The number of servings this recipe makes. |
| Prep Time | The amount of preparation time this recipe requires. |
| Cook Time | The amount of cooking time this recipe requires. |
| Total Time | The total amount of time this recipe requires. |
| Rating | A star rating from 0 to 5 for this recipe. |
| Categories | The categories this recipe belongs to. |
| Cookbook | The cookbook this recipe belongs to. If the recipe has categories the other cookbook doesn't, Paprika asks whether to copy them into it. |
| Source | Where this recipe came from. |
| Source URL | This is an optional field that records the original URL of the recipe if it came from a website. |
| Description | A short introduction of the recipe, displayed above the directions. |
| Notes | Any cooking notes you would like to include with the recipe. Displayed below the directions. |
| Nutrition | Nutrition notes, a Nutrition Facts table, or both. Displayed below the ingredients. See Nutrition. |
| Ingredients | The ingredients required for this recipe. Note Create ingredient headings by ending them with a colon (e.g. Sauce:). |
| Directions | The directions for this recipe. |
| Photos | An optional thumbnail and one or more higher-resolution images. You can take a new photo with the camera, choose images from your photo library, or paste an image from the clipboard. |
You can add formatting and images to the description, ingredients, directions, nutrition and notes fields.
When you are editing these fields, a formatting toolbar appears above the keyboard. From left to right it holds Bold, Italic, Heading, Bulleted List, Numbered List, Link, Recipe, Photo and Help. The row scrolls sideways when the buttons do not all fit, and a Close button is pinned to the right-hand end to dismiss the toolbar.
Note
The formatting toolbar can be turned off entirely: see Show Text Formatting Buttons under Keyboard in Settings.
Paprika uses a modified form of Markdown for formatting:
| Format | Syntax | Instructions |
|---|---|---|
| Bold | **bold** or __bold__ |
Surround words with two asterisks or two underscores. |
| Italic | *italics* or _italics_ |
Surround words with one asterisk or one underscore. |
| Links | [Google](https://www.google.com) |
Put the title in brackets and the URL in parentheses. Only the title is displayed. |
| Photos | [photo:Mixing the Batter] |
Put the name of one of the recipe's photos in brackets, after photo:. A thumbnail is displayed; tap it to see the full size image in the photo gallery. |
| Recipes | [recipe:Brussels Sprouts with Pancetta] |
Put the name of another recipe in brackets, after recipe:. Tap the link to open that recipe. |
| Headings | # Sauce |
Start a line with # and a space. Use ## to ###### for smaller headings. |
| Unordered List | - Preheat the oven |
Start each line with a dash and a space. |
| Ordered List | 1. Preheat the oven |
Start each line with a number, a period and a space. |
A heading or a list has to start its own paragraph: leave a blank line before it when it follows other text.
Paprika looks up photos and recipes based on name; if multiple recipes exist with the same name, the first recipe Paprika finds will be opened. If multiple photos exist with the same name, the first will be selected. If the recipe or photo name changes, links will need to be updated.
Note
A built-in Markdown guide describing all of the supported formatting is available from the Help button on the formatting toolbar.
You can add multiple photos to a recipe, and photos are synced with your cloud data. You can add photos up to 20 MB in size. When the recipe is saved, Paprika scales each photo down to fit within 3096 pixels on its longest side, and further if needed to keep it under 5 MB.
From the edit recipe form, tap the photo thumbnail to see all photos associated with the recipe. To add a photo, tap the button in the toolbar. There are 3 ways to add a photo:
Each photo displays its name, file size and pixel dimensions below the thumbnailed image. Tap a photo to open it in the photo gallery, then press the button in the gallery's toolbar and choose Edit to rename the photo or Delete to remove it. To use one of the photos as the recipe's thumbnail, press the button in the Photos toolbar, choose Choose Thumbnail, and tap the photo. Delete Thumbnail in the same menu removes the thumbnail.
The photo name is used to identify the photo when embedding it in text, and will also be displayed at the top of the photo gallery.
Tap and hold a photo, then drag it to reorder photos and change their position in the photo gallery.
The thumbnail does not need to be one of the associated photos in the gallery. Deleting the thumbnail will not affect existing recipe photos.
Note
Photos will be uploaded to the cloud immediately but downloaded on demand by other devices (to save space). Photos associated with a recipe are downloaded when that recipe is opened.
From the recipes screen, tap on a recipe in the listing in order to open the recipe. This is the main recipe view.
The recipe info is displayed first. You can use the tab bar to switch between viewing the ingredients and directions. Alternatively, you can simply swipe between each pane. The description is displayed above the directions, the notes below the directions, and any nutritional information, including a Nutrition Facts label, below the ingredients.
Note
On tablets, the ingredients are displayed on the left, information about the recipe is displayed near the top, and the directions are displayed to the right.
Note
If the recipe has a source URL, the source will be highlighted. You can tap on the source to load the original source URL in the browser.
Note
Tap the thumbnail next to the recipe name or any photo embedded in the recipe text to open the photo gallery.
The buttons in the middle of the toolbar are the most common actions you can perform with the recipe. Tap and hold a button to see its name.
| Action | Description |
|---|---|
| Add to Grocery List | Add this recipe to the grocery list. You'll be asked to choose ingredients first. |
| Add to Meal Planner | You can add a recipe to the meal planner using this button. Select the date and type of meal you would like to add this recipe to, and then press . |
| Add to Favorites | Add this recipe to your favorites. Tap the button again to remove it from your favorites. |
Less common actions are placed under the button in the upper right corner of the toolbar:
| Action | Description |
|---|---|
| Duplicate | Allows you to save a new copy of the recipe. Good when trying out recipe variations. |
| Print the contents of this recipe using Android's print services. Paprika offers many print options, such as page type and font size. More on that below. | |
Email recipients can import the recipe into their copy of Paprika by tapping the .paprikarecipes attachment. The recipe is also displayed as text in the body of the email. |
|
| Message | Send this recipe to another Paprika user as an in-app message. See Sending Recipes & Cookbooks for details. |
| Delete | Moves the recipe to the Trash category. |
| Share | Contains Source Link, Paprika File, and Recipe Text — share the recipe's source URL, a .paprikarecipes file, or the recipe as plain text with any app on your device, using the Android share sheet. Source Link only appears when the recipe has a source URL. |
As described above, printing is accessed via the button in the recipe toolbar. Printing goes through Android's print services, so you can print to any printer your device supports, or save the recipe as a PDF. There are several options you can configure for printing. They are grouped under Print Options, Card Options, Recipe Options and Photo Options, and only the options that apply to the chosen page type are shown:
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
| Page Type | Allows you to change the page type of the printed recipe. Options available are: Full Page, Index Cards, and Index Card Sheets. Index Cards will print to physical index cards, while Index Card Sheets is meant for printing several index cards on full page paper and then cutting them out. |
| Paper Size | Allows you to choose the paper size to print on. |
| Orientation | Portrait (taller than wide) or Landscape (wider than tall). |
| Font Size | Allows you to change the font size of the printed recipe. |
| Page Margins | Sets the margins of the printed page, in inches. |
| Card Size | Allows you to change the size of the index card. Options are given in inches. |
| Card Margins | Sets the margins of each index card, in inches. |
| Divider | When printing more than one recipe, controls the divider between recipes: Page Break or Line. |
| Layout | Choose whether ingredients and directions print side by side in two columns, or in a single vertical column: One Column, Two Columns, or Two Columns (Wrap). |
| Show Info | Whether or not the recipe's rating, categories, times, servings, difficulty and source should be printed. |
| Show Notes | Whether or not the recipe's notes should be printed. |
| Show Nutrition | Whether or not the recipe's Nutrition Facts label and nutrition notes should be printed. |
| Show Photos | Control whether the recipe photos are printed: Thumbnail Only, All Photos, or None. Thumbnail Size and Thumbnail Position set the thumbnail's size and whether it sits on the left or right, and Photo Size sets the size of the other photos when printing all photos. |
Timers are automatically detected in your recipe's directions and highlighted. In order to start a timer, simply tap on the highlighted time and press .
Viewing timers - To view all of your timers, tap the button in the lower toolbar of the recipe view; this brings up the timers list. Running timers are also displayed in the Main Menu, complete with live countdowns — tap a timer there to open it. If there is enough space, running timers appear in the recipe's lower toolbar as well.
Adding a timer manually - From the timers list, tap the button. You can choose a name for the timer (the recipe name is the default). Once you have selected a time, press to begin the timer.
Removing timers - Timers are automatically removed once they have elapsed. If you would like to manually remove a timer, tap and hold to put the timers list into selection mode, choose the timers you want to remove, and tap the button in the toolbar.
Editing timers - To change the name or time of a timer, select the timer from the timers list. You can also pause, resume, edit and cancel the timer from this screen, and see the remaining duration of the timer.
Note
When a timer finishes, Paprika shows a Time's Up! message and plays your device's alarm sound, even if the app is not open. Tap in the message or in the notification to silence it. If nobody stops it, the alarm stops on its own after 10 minutes. If you run into issues, make sure you have allowed Paprika to send notifications, that your device is not muted, and that your volume is turned up.
Note
Paprika asks for permission to set alarms so that timers go off on time. If you turn that permission off, timers still go off, but they may be a few minutes late while your device is idle.
Scaling - You can scale the ingredients of a recipe by tapping the button below the Ingredients heading. When the ingredients scaling popup appears, select the amount you'd like to scale the ingredients by and they will change automatically. The scale button will update to display the current recipe scale.
The amount to scale can be entered as a whole number, decimal, or fraction (ex: 3, 0.25, 1/3).
If you add a scaled recipe to the grocery list, the grocery list items will preserve the ingredients scaling.
Note
Paprika anticipates this ingredient format: quantity unit ingredient, i.e. 1 cup milk. For best results, ensure your ingredients are entered in this format.
Converting - You can also use this popup to convert ingredient units between metric and imperial, or reset them back to their original units.
When you are cooking, you may find it useful to cross off ingredients once you have used them. Simply tap the desired ingredient in order to cross it off. (Tap again to un-cross it.)
You can also highlight the current step of your directions by tapping on it to help keep your place.
You can pin active recipes to easily switch between them while you are cooking. To pin a recipe, tap the button in the lower toolbar of the recipe view. This opens the Pinned Recipes list; tap to pin the recipe you're viewing. Tap a recipe in the list to switch to it.
Pinned recipes are displayed in the Main Menu, and buttons for one or more of your pinned recipes also appear in the lower toolbar of the recipe view — so you can hop between the dishes you are cooking with a single tap. When a recipe is pinned, Paprika will keep track of the ingredients you have crossed off and the current directions you have highlighted, so you don't lose your place.
When you're done cooking, open the Pinned Recipes list again and tap . To remove several pins at once, tap Edit in the list's toolbar, select the recipes, and tap Unpin, or tap Clear All to remove every pin.
If there are photos associated with the recipe, you can tap the thumbnail next to the recipe name — or any photo embedded in the recipe text — to display the photo gallery. The corner of the thumbnail shows a photo icon with the number of photos, or a link icon when the thumbnail opens a photo from the web instead.
The photo gallery contains an ordered list of photos with names displayed at the top, and a strip of thumbnails along the bottom showing which photo you are viewing. Swipe left and right to move between photos, or tap a thumbnail to jump to it. Pinch to zoom in on a photo.
Note
When downloading recipes via the browser, only a link to the online photo is saved unless you explicitly add photos to the recipe. In the case that the thumbnail references a linked photo, tapping the thumbnail opens the photo in Paprika's browser.
Note
While Paprika is syncing, a recipe can arrive before its photos. If you tap its thumbnail then, Paprika tells you the photos for this recipe are still syncing.
A recipe can hold two kinds of nutrition information: nutrition notes you type yourself, and a Nutrition Facts table like the label on packaged food. Paprika can fill in the table for you by analyzing the recipe's ingredients.
While editing a recipe, tap the Nutrition header to open the box. The Text | Table buttons at the top switch between the two kinds of nutrition information. Paprika saves both, so a recipe can have notes and a table.
Servings, Serving Size, Serving Weight in grams, and the amount per serving of each nutrient on the label, from Calories down to Potassium. Use the and buttons to change the servings, which start at the recipe's own.If your notes already list values such as "Calories: 250", tap below the Text | Table buttons to copy them into the table.
Paprika can calculate the Nutrition Facts from the recipe's ingredients. It matches each ingredient to a food in the USDA nutrition database and works out its weight from the amount in the recipe.
To analyze a recipe, switch the Nutrition box to Table and tap . Paprika lists each ingredient with the food it matched. An ingredient may also show:
No USDA Match - Paprika couldn't find a matching food.No Ingredient Detected - the line isn't an ingredient, such as a heading. Not counted - the ingredient is left out of the totals.Tap an ingredient to open Edit Ingredient, where you can:
Quantity and Measurement that Paprika read.USDA Mapping. Tap Choose… and search for the food in Find Food.Exclude from calculation for an ingredient you won't use. When a line offers a choice, such as "butter or margarine", Paprika counts only one of them. When the list looks right, tap . If some ingredients have no usable match, Paprika warns you with Unmatched Ingredients. Choose Calculate Anyway to leave them out, or Cancel to go back and fix them.
The Nutrition Facts screen shows the calculated amounts per serving. Change the servings to recalculate the amounts, or edit any value directly. If the recipe gives no amount for an ingredient, such as "salt to taste", a note lists what the totals leave out. Tap to copy the values into the recipe's table.
Note
The results of ingredient analysis are estimates. Paprika remembers your changes in the analysis while you edit the recipe, so you can close it and come back.
When a recipe has Nutrition Facts, the recipe view shows them as a label in the Nutrition section, with the servings per recipe, the serving size, calories, and each nutrient's percent daily value. If the recipe also has nutrition notes, use the Table | Text switch above the label to see either one.
To print nutrition information, turn on Show Nutrition in the print options. The printout includes both the Nutrition Facts label and your notes.
Paprika allows you to organize recipes into categories to make them easier to manage.
Note
Each cookbook has its own set of categories.
To edit a recipe's categories, navigate into the recipe and tap the button in order to edit the recipe. From here, press the row to access the recipe's categories. You can check one (or more) categories to associate with the recipe. Press the button when you are done.
The wand button beside the row suggests categories for the recipe.
Paprika can suggest categories for a recipe based on its name, ingredients, and directions. While editing a recipe, tap the wand button beside the row. Paprika adds up to five categories to the recipe, using your existing categories where they fit. Review them before you save, and remove any you don't want.
Two settings in the Recipes group of the Settings panel control suggestions:
Auto-Suggest Categories - Suggests categories automatically when you add a recipe from the browser, a shared link, the clipboard, or a scan. Off by default.Suggest New Categories - Lets suggestions include categories you don't have yet. Turn it off to use only your existing categories. On by default. The wand button works whether or not Auto-Suggest Categories is turned on.
From the main recipes screen, press the button in the toolbar to reveal the categories list. From here, press to add a new category.
Note
On tablets, press the button in the categories pane's toolbar.
Optional To create a subcategory, press and choose the parent category of the subcategory you would like to create. This allows the creation of hierarchies; for example, "Breakfast" might contain "Eggs" and "Baked Goods" as separate subcategories.
To edit or delete a category, tap and hold over the category until buttons appear next to the names of the categories.
From there you can press either the button to edit the category name, or, in this state, delete one or more categories by selecting them and then pressing the button in the toolbar.
There are a number of built-in categories. These categories cannot be removed and provide special ways to view your recipes:
| Category | Description |
|---|---|
| All Recipes | Lists all of the recipes in your collection in alphabetical order. |
| Most Recent | Sorts your recipes by the date they were added, with the most recent recipes near the top. |
| Top Rated | Lists all of the recipes in order from highest star rating to lowest. |
| Favorites | List all recipes that you have added to your favorites. |
| Uncategorized | Lists all of the recipes that have not been assigned to a category. |
| Trash | Lists all of the recipes that have been deleted. Emptying the trash will permanently delete these recipes. |
Paprika 4 allows you to organize your recipes into multiple cookbooks. Each cookbook is a separate collection with its own recipes and categories. You might use one cookbook for everyday cooking, another for baking, and a third for recipes you're still planning to try.
Every account starts with a single cookbook named My Cookbook. If you never create another cookbook, Paprika works just like it always has. Your default cookbook cannot be deleted.
Note
Cookbooks are synced with your Paprika account, so your cookbooks will appear on all of your devices.
The name of the current cookbook is displayed at the top of the categories list. From the recipes screen, tap the category button in the toolbar to bring up the categories list, then tap the cookbook name in its toolbar to reveal the Cookbooks picker, which lists all of your cookbooks. Select the cookbook you would like to view. The recipes list and categories apply to the currently selected cookbook. A search starts there too, but you can widen it to other cookbooks.
Note
On tablets, the categories list is always displayed in the pane to the left of your recipes — tap the cookbook name at the top of that pane to open the Cookbooks picker.
To create a new cookbook, open the Cookbooks picker and press the button in its toolbar. Enter a name for your new cookbook and save.
The Cookbooks picker also lets you manage your cookbooks: use its sort option to change how the list is ordered, or tap and hold a cookbook (or press the button) to enter selection mode. In selection mode, press the button beside a cookbook to rename it, or select one or more cookbooks and press the button in the toolbar at the top to delete them. Paprika will ask you to confirm before deleting. Your default cookbook can be renamed but not deleted.
Note
Deleting a cookbook deletes the recipes and categories inside it. The recipes do not go into the Trash, so if you would like to keep any of them, move them to another cookbook first.
To move recipes into a different cookbook, tap and hold a recipe in the recipes list to put the list into selection mode, select any additional recipes you would like to move, and then press the button in the floating toolbar and choose Change Cookbook. Select the destination cookbook.
If the recipes' categories don't all exist in the destination cookbook yet, Paprika asks whether to copy them there. Choose to create the missing categories in the destination cookbook, or to move the recipes without them.
You can send a copy of an entire cookbook to another Paprika user. From the recipes screen, press the button in the floating toolbar and choose the Share action named after the current cookbook, such as Share "Desserts". Enter the recipient's email address and send — the cookbook is delivered as an in-app message, and the recipient can import all of its recipes in one step. See Sending Recipes & Cookbooks for details.
Note
If you are part of a family account, your family members share your recipe collection automatically — you don't need to share cookbooks with them individually.
Paprika's built in web browser lets you easily search the internet for your favorite recipes and save recipes from many different websites.
The upper toolbar contains a combined address bar and search bar, a reload/stop button, the button, and a menu with Share, to send the page's link to another app, and Open in Browser, to open the page in your default web browser. A thin progress bar underneath shows the page loading.
The lower toolbar displays buttons for standard browser actions and tools for saving recipes. In order from left to right, the buttons are: back, forward, show/hide clipboard tools, edit clipboard recipe, and .
Note
On tablets, the browser uses a wider layout and the clipboard tools are always visible.
Tap the address bar and type a URL to navigate to that page (ex: 101cookbooks.com), or type in a search term to perform a recipe search (ex: beet salad).
The button displays your current bookmarks. From there you can load a bookmark into the browser, edit a bookmark, and add new bookmarks to the list. Bookmarks sync with your other cloud data.
Note
The browser's home page is Paprika's directory of popular recipe sites. You can choose a different home page with the Home Page setting in the Settings panel.
Paprika supports clipping recipes from hundreds of different recipe sites. In order to clip a recipe:
Edit Recipe form. Review the recipe fields, then press to add the recipe to your collection.Note
In the free version of Paprika, downloading is limited by the 100 recipe limit.
In addition to traditional recipe sites, Paprika can save recipes from social media posts, stories, and pages on sites such as TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. Paprika reads the recipe from the text of the post, including its caption or description, so posts on other sites may work too.
The easiest way is to share the post straight from the app it's in: tap the post's button and choose Paprika 4. Paprika will read the post's text and extract the recipe into structured ingredients and directions, then open the filled-in recipe form for you to review and save — no browsing required.
You can also paste a post's link into the address bar of Paprika's browser and press .
If Paprika wasn't able to clip the recipe for you, or only partially clipped the recipe, you can use the clipboard tools at the bottom of the browser to manually copy/paste the recipe information from any website. Tap the show/hide clipboard tools button in the lower toolbar to reveal the clipboard tools row.
To use the clipboard tools:
Name field.Ingredients, Directions, and any other fields you would like to capture. You can scroll the row horizontally to reveal the extra fields: Name, Description, Ingredients, Directions, Prep Time, Cook Time, Total Time, Servings, Notes, and Nutrition.Copy Photo to Clipboard, and Save to Photo Library to save the image to your device. If you prefer to browse for recipes in another browser or app, you can use that app's button to send a recipe link to Paprika. Choose Paprika 4 from the Android share sheet, and the link will open in Paprika's browser, allowing you to the recipe as described above.
Note
Links to social media posts, such as those shared from TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube, are handled specially — Paprika extracts the recipe from the post's text, as described in Clipping Recipes from Social Media.
Note
You can also open .paprikarecipes files shared from other apps — such as an email attachment or a file in your Downloads folder — and Paprika will offer to import the recipes they contain.
Paprika's grocery list makes it easy to shop for your recipes. You can make multiple grocery lists, add entire recipes to your grocery list, as well as your own custom grocery items.
By default, your grocery list will be sorted into aisles based on the type of ingredient. For example, milk will be placed into the Dairy aisle, and spinach will be placed under Produce.
The grocery list will also automatically attempt to consolidate similar items with one another. For example, if one recipe calls for 2 eggs, and another recipe calls for 3 eggs, the consolidated listing will display 5 eggs total.
Note
You can turn off both the grocery list aisle sorting and consolidation features in the Settings panel if you do not find them useful.
To add an entire recipe to the grocery list, open the recipe and press the button in the toolbar.
An ingredients pane will pop up displaying that recipe's ingredient list. Here you can check/uncheck ingredients before they are added to the grocery list. If you have more than one grocery list, you can also choose which list to add them to.
(For example, if you already have salt at home, you can uncheck it before adding the recipe to the grocery list.)
Note
Ingredients you have in stock in your Pantry will be automatically unchecked for you.
Once you have the correct ingredients checked, press the button to add those ingredients to the grocery list.
Custom items can be added to the grocery list by typing them into the Add Item field at the top of the list and pressing Done on the keyboard. The field clears, ready for the next item. If you paste several lines, each line is added as its own item.
If you are adding a common grocery item, the aisle will be automatically selected for you as you type. You can change the aisle after the item has been added by tapping on the item and selecting a new aisle. Paprika will remember and sync the change.
Your current entry will also be autocompleted as you type. You can tap on a suggestion to select it.
To edit a grocery list item, tap on the grocery item row to open the edit screen for that item.
From here you can edit the grocery item and change its aisle, notes, quantity, and list. The and buttons beside the quantity change its number by one, so 2 cups becomes 3 cups.
You can remove individual items from the grocery list by tapping and holding an item (or pressing the button in the floating toolbar) to enter selection mode, selecting the desired items for deletion, and then pressing the button in the toolbar at the top.
Finally, you can clear the entire list using the action described below.
Mark an item as purchased simply by tapping it once. A checkmark will appear to indicate that the item has been purchased. You can mark the item as unpurchased by tapping it once more.
Press the button in the floating toolbar to filter the grocery list. The button is highlighted while a filter is on.
All, Bought, or To Buy. (When you are shopping you may find it easiest to select To Buy, to only show the unpurchased items left on your grocery list.)Entire Grocery List, My Items to show only the items you added yourself, or a recipe to show only its ingredients. While you are showing only the items to buy, a line at the end of the list says how many purchased items are hidden, such as 12 purchased items hidden. Tap it to see those items, without changing your filter. Tap beside it to remove the purchased items from the list. If every item has been purchased, the list says All Items Purchased and offers a button.
By default, your grocery list will be sorted into aisles based on the type of ingredient. If you prefer, you can change the grocery list to sort by recipe, by pressing the button in the floating toolbar and choosing Recipe instead.
Paprika starts with one grocery list named My Grocery List. This list cannot be deleted, but it can be renamed. You can add additional grocery lists if you would like — for example, separate lists for different stores.
Note
Adding grocery lists is not available in the free version of Paprika.
The name of the currently selected grocery list is displayed in the toolbar. Tap it to reveal the Grocery Lists screen. From there you can select a different grocery list, add a new list, or edit an existing list.
Note
On tablets, all of your grocery lists are displayed in the pane to the left of the current list. Tap on a grocery list to select it.
Press the button in the Grocery Lists screen to create a new grocery list.
Choose from the list's menu to rename the current grocery list. You can also rename, reorder, and delete lists from the Grocery Lists screen: tap and hold a list (or press the button) to enter selection mode. Press the button beside a list to rename it, or select one or more lists and press the button in the toolbar at the top to delete them. To reorder your lists, press the Sort By button and choose Custom, then enter selection mode and drag the handles beside the lists.
You can access these actions by pressing the button at the end of the floating toolbar.

While you are selecting items, the button offers Move to Pantry, Move to List, Copy to Pantry and Copy to List for the selected items.
The pantry can be accessed by pressing the section in the Main Menu.
Use the pantry to keep track of common ingredients you already have at home, such as: salt, pepper, flour, sugar, etc.
For each pantry item you can record the quantity, purchase date, expiration date, and whether it is in stock or out of stock.
Ingredients placed in your pantry will automatically be unchecked when you add recipes or meal plans to your grocery list.
To add an item to the pantry, type the ingredient name into the Add Item field at the top of the pantry and press Done on the keyboard.
Shortcut You can also add items by scanning their barcodes — see Scanning Barcodes below.
Tap on a pantry item to open the Edit Pantry Item screen for that item. From here you'll be able to update the item's ingredient, aisle, location, quantity, purchase date, expiration date and notes, and whether it is In Stock. The and buttons beside the quantity change its number by one, so 2 cups becomes 3 cups.
You can organize your pantry into multiple locations, such as Pantry, Fridge, Freezer, or Spice Rack.
The name of the current location is displayed in the pantry's toolbar — tap it to reveal your locations, then tap a location to view the items stored there. From the locations list you can also add a new location, or edit an existing one. The default location cannot be deleted, but it can be renamed.
Note
On tablets, your locations are displayed in the pane to the left of the pantry items.
To move an item to a different location, tap and hold it to enter selection mode, then press the button in the floating toolbar and choose Move to Location. You can also choose Copy to Location if you would like the item listed in more than one location.
Note
Pantry locations are synced across your devices.
You can add pantry items by scanning their barcodes with your camera. Tap the button in the pantry toolbar, then point the camera at a product's barcode.
When a barcode is recognized, Paprika looks up the product and starts a new pantry item with the product's name filled in for you. Review the details in the Edit Pantry Item screen and save.
Note
Barcode scanning requires camera access and a device that supports barcode scanning.
By default, your pantry will be sorted into aisles, similar to the grocery list.
If you prefer, you can change the pantry sort order by pressing the button in the floating toolbar. You can choose between sorting by: Aisle, Date Added, Expiration Date, or In Stock.
You can access these actions by pressing the button at the end of the floating toolbar.

A calendar feed shows your meal plan in Google Calendar, Outlook, Apple Calendar, or any other calendar app that can subscribe to a calendar by its link. The calendar stays up to date as you plan, change, and delete meals in Paprika.
To set up a calendar feed:
Calendar Feed under Meal Planner.Note
The Google Calendar app for Android can't subscribe to calendars itself. Copy the link, and add it with Other calendars › From URL in Google Calendar on the web. The calendar then appears in the app too.
The feed appears as a calendar named Paprika. Each meal appears at the time set for its meal type, or as an all-day event. The feed includes the meals from the past year and everything you've planned ahead. Your link is the same on all of your devices.
Note
Calendar apps check for changes on their own schedule, so a change can take a while to appear. Google Calendar can take up to a day to update.
Anyone with the link can see your meal plan. To stop a calendar from updating, return to Calendar Feed and tap . Calendars subscribed to the link stop updating, and you can create a new link at any time.
Note
Creating a calendar feed requires a Paprika account. If your subscription ends, the feed keeps the meals planned up to that date but stops adding new ones.
The settings panel allows you to configure Paprika's default behavior.

Paprika can import recipe databases from several other applications. To perform an import:
Import Recipes from the Manage group.File and select the file to be imported using your device's file picker.Format of the file.Note
When importing a Paprika export file, any cookbooks recorded in the file are imported as well, and the recipes are assigned to the correct cookbooks.
Shortcut You can also import a .paprikarecipes file simply by opening it — for example, tap the file in your file manager, or tap a recipe attachment in your email app — and Paprika will offer to import it.
The currently supported file types are:
| Supported File Types | |
| .paprikarecipe & .paprikarecipes | Paprika's emailed recipe format and its export format. |
| .mx2, .mxp & .mz2 | MasterCook export formats. |
| .mmf | MealMaster export format. |
| .fdx & .fdxz | Living Cookbook export formats. |
| .yml & .yaml | A plain YAML file. See below for more details on this format. |
| .dvo | Cook'n export format. |
| .db | Pepperplate database file. Click here for instructions on how to get your database file from Pepperplate. |
| .zip | Pepperplate or Copy Me That export. Choose the matching Format when asked. |
| .mcb | My Cookbook export format. |
YAML is a simple, plain text file with sections delimited by key-value pairs. To indicate a block of text, use an initial pipe character, as shown in directions and ingredients. Consistent indenting should be used, but the order of the fields does not matter, and most are optional with the exception of the name, ingredients and directions. It is recommended that you use an online YAML validator such as this one to validate your file if you're experiencing difficulties importing.
Note
The YAML format is quite strict with regards to whitespace and indentation. Please also make sure your file is saved with a UTF-8 encoding.

Paprika currently offers two different export formats:
| Export Formats | |
| HTML |
A standard portable data format that allows you to preserve a copy of your recipe collection. Your recipes
will be exported to a directory, with an individual HTML file for each recipe, and an index.html
displaying the list of exported recipes.
|
| .paprikarecipes | Paprika's bulk recipe export format. These files can be easily imported into any copy of Paprika. |
Export Recipes from the Manage group.Category to export. By default All Recipes will be selected, but you can choose to export one or more different categories if you would like.HTML or Paprika Recipe Format.Downloads folder.Note
The Use Unicode filenames option controls whether exported files may use accented and non-Latin characters in their names. Turn it off if the receiving system has trouble with such filenames.
Note
On older versions of Android, Paprika may ask for storage permission before exporting.
You can link your Paprika account to Amazon Alexa for use with the Paprika skill on your Echo devices. To link your account, open the Settings panel and choose Alexa from the Connections group. The screen shows whether your account is currently linked; press and follow the sign-in steps to connect, or unlink to disconnect.
Note
The Alexa connection requires a Paprika account.
Over the years, it's easy to end up with the same recipe saved more than once. The Find Duplicates tool helps you clean these up. To open it, choose Find Duplicates from the Manage group of the Settings panel.
Turn on the fields that must match: Name, Source, Source URL, Ingredients, or Directions. Recipes are considered duplicates when all of the chosen fields match. Then tap Search.
The matching recipes are listed in groups. Tap to select every recipe except the oldest in each group, review the selection, and then tap to move the selected recipes to the Trash.
